Modelling of the electron density profile in the high latitude lower ionosphere

Using the fluxes of the 1-500 MeV protons the computations of the ion composition for the night conditions in the height range 50-90 km during the solar proton event of 23 October 1989 have been carried out. The response of the electron density profile to the atomic oxygen and the ozone concentration variation has been investigated. The rates of processes responsible for the formation of the electron density profile have been investigated to interpret the obtained dependences. It has been shown that the electron density distribution observed by the EISCAT radar during the examined nighttime proton event is satisfactorily described with the help of the atomic oxygen and ozone profiles measured during the disturbances in the D-region.
